Dr. Dre – Rapper, DJ, A-list Producer, record label mogul and headphone entrepreneur, yes the career of Compton’s first son has come a long way since he first came onto the scene with World Class Wrekin’ Crew back in 1984. However, it wasn’t until he teamed up with fellow rappers Easy-E and Ice Cube in the seminal NWA that he first came to real prominence. The release of their controversial hit single “Fuck the Police” and ensuing album “Straight Outta Compton” birthed the gangster rap sub-genre and went on to sell over three million copies despite no radio play or touring

And yet this was to be only the tip of the iceberg for Dre; in 1989, following Ice Cube’s departure he continued on with NWA for another couple of years and began to produce for other artists on the Ruthless Records (Run by Easy-E) roster. However, following a dispute with Easy-E, Dre was released from his Ruthless contract and allowed to team up with the infamous Suge Knight as the flagship artist for the newly formed, Death Row Records. 1993 saw the release of Dre’s debut solo full length, “The Chronic” another landmark record which was the first to coin the G-funk musical style which would become both Dre’s trademark and the dominant sound in West Coast hip-hop for the majority of the early 90s.

In 1996, Dre left Death Row following another dispute and formed his own label, Aftermath Records which in the coming years would also become the home of a Eminem, 50 Cent and Game, all of which would he would also go on to produce as his career shifted away from the spotlight and more towards the mixing desk following the release of his second album in 1999, the critical and commercial smash “2001”

We’re still waiting for Dre to drop the much delayed follow up, “Detox” and though signs are a little more promising on that front following the release of hit singles “Kush” an the Alex Da Kid produced “I Need a Doctor” there’
